Mark Rogers has given us his best character yet in Lilitu, the sixth book in the Zanchartus series.The book tells us the story of Lilitu from Blood+Pearls & Jagutai+Lilitu from birth until shortly before the events of those books. I've read all of Rogers' books and Lilitu is the best character that he has ever created. She is smart, sexy and very charming, even when she is being a bad girl. There's something about Lilitu and just about everyone she meets, falls in love with her. You will, too!
Rogers gives us some other great characters in this book, too. There'sToghril, a mutilated but unkillable bandit who is convinced that Lilitu is his mother, even though he is older than she is. Armanus is a merchant/slavetrader who buys Lilitu, but hides a terrible secret. Lilitu meets a number of half-sisters, the strangest being Saadiq, a girl who is convinced she's a boy.On the way we have a fair amount of sex, some great action sequences and a truly imaginative locale for the climax.
You don't have to have read the other books in the series (although you should) to enjoy this one. Buy it today!

Smart, slutty Lilitu leads us on a twisted tour of Mark E. Rogers' fantasy universe. This book is a riot, packed with colorful characters including hideously disfigured barbarian mama's boys and megalomaniac poetesses. There's loads of graphic sex, but if that's not your cup of tea, there's also loads of graphic violence. Check it out!
An amazing origin tale of that living ember of smoldering sexuality, Lilitu. Ripped from a comfortable life by a scheming stepmother (who suffers the fiery wrath of Lilitu) she is thrust into a life of adventure and danger. Although frequently a prisoner she blazes her way through her world igniting passions, carnal desires and deep, but woefully misguided, feelings of maternal love that wreak havoc to all that come under her spell. This tale takes you from burning deserts filled with insane (but pretty darned amusing) bandits to the depths of insanity in a cave of living and vengeful ice. If you would like a bawdy tale of outrageous sex and vicious violence that splashes gleefully across the pages, then this is indeed the book for you. And as always in Mr. Rogers's books you will find nuggets of philosophical musings woven in as cleverly and subtly as the arcane knowledge found in the rigging of some sailing vessels. Plus any story that has as a weapon a demonic, atomic bomb is alright with me. In the meantime, enjoy and see you all at the donkey races.
I've enjoyed every book by Mark Rogers that I've picked up, and Lilitu is no exception. Sexy, vivid, and deeply absorbing, the story and the characters just keep drawing you forward. Terrible Toghril, likable but cowardly Cheung Leung, too-proud Armanus, sleazy Razzam, sex goddess Torrisanna... they all get to you and, whether they're good or bad (mostly bad), you want to know what happens to them. I also very much appreciate the description of magic in Rogers' fantasy books... it's unique, which is no mean feat, and it's interesting as well. If you like magic, sex, violence, and personality, you'll get your money's worth and then some with this book.
Now, I wouldn't say this is Rogers' masterwork... you could certainly start with Lilitu, but, if you haven't already, read Blood and Pearls, then read the ones after that, and then snap this up as a compelling companion piece. As for why I knocked a star off, more than anything else it was because I found the author's philosophical viewpoints intrusive to the narrative. Rogers writes from a Christian point of view - check out The Dead if you're curious about his take on the zombie apocalypse Revelations style - and you can take that for what it is, but I found the book's denigrating tone towards male homosexuality and transsexuality to be a bit irksome. While no one in Lilitu is a shining paragon of mental health, Rogers makes it hard to imagine that in his universe there could exist a gay man or a transgendered person who is truly healthy and happy, and I found that at times this fact just distracted me from the story.
And that's my $.02!
I've been a fan of Rogers' for 25 years and am constantly amazed by the high quality of work. Most writers get less interesting as they chug along--Rogers, somehow, maintains a superior level of artistic expression without repeating himself.
Regarding Lilitu specifically--she is the most memorable Femme Fatale in print. Period. She's sexy, ruthless, intelligent and very funny...and realistic. It is eminently believable that the good guy of the story (the straight-laced, noble and equally fleshed out, Jagutai) is tormented by the mere thought of her. Their back-and-forth dialogue is truly high quality stuff.
Per usual, for Rogers' work, the story is philosophical, which is another way in which the author separates himself from the pack; you'll learn something about life's larger questions, and about yourself, while being entertained.
You will enjoy "Lilitu", guaranteed.
