Gideon Crew – brilliant scientist, master thief – is living on borrowed time. When he’s handed an eyebrow-raising mission by his mysterious employer, Gideon has no reason to refuse. His task? To steal a page from the priceless Book of Kells, now on display in New York City, protected by unbreakable security.

Accomplishing the impossible, Gideon steals the parchment – only to learn that hidden beneath the gorgeously illuminated image is a treasure map dating back to the time of the ancient Greeks, treasure that could, perhaps, save Gideon’s life.

it seems to have taken Mssrs. Preston and Child a few attempts to find their footing with their character Gideon Crew, but at last they have. This third novel is far and away the strongest of the series. Our beloved authors have crafted one of those "Where do they come up with these ideas!" plots, so I want to be very circumspect in what I reveal. In The Lost Island, Gideon again finds himself in the employ of Eli Glinn. He is tasked with a daring art heist as the first step in a search for a substance with significant medical implications. And that's all I'm telling you, because...

It's not really all that surprising that there are over-the-top elements to the novel's plot. I mean, we've seen that from these two before. But the underlying premise this time around was so novel and just so much fun that I wouldn't want to spoil it with hints. I will say this: Many novels drag a bit in the middle. In this case, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I was just so darn amused by the proceedings. The novel's opening was also strong, leaping immediately into the action of the tale. Preston and Child are brilliant when it comes to plotting, and their talents are fully on display here.

If I have one complaint--and I do--it's that the motivations and actions of some of the characters truly stretched my credulity as the novel's denouement drew close. Okay, and one more... At one point a character proclaims, "It's so obvious." And, d'uh, it REALLY is.

But... The novel's epilogue is truly AWESOME, and will leave long-time fans SALIVATING for the next (Final?) book in the Gideon Crew series. Count me among their number! I begin plotting now on my evil plan to obtain an early draft of the manuscript. BWAHAHAHA!

The Lost Island Gideon Crew Book 3 edition by Douglas Preston Lincoln Child Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I give this book three stars for the following reasons The book is a fairly entertaining read, and quickly grabs the reader and keeps the story line moving. I loved the strong character Amiko. She rocked. However, there are some flaws in the story that I just couldn't overcome.

During the theft of the page from the Book of Kells, the authors go into elaborate details regarding the security that was implemented in order to bring the book from Ireland and display in the US. However, despite all the marvelous technology designed to thwart potential thieves, Gideon Crew somehow manages to bring in a flash bang/smoke bomb as a diversion, as well as a small explosive device to damage the cube the book is displayed in. So, while creating a diversion with the flash bang, he then has time to attach the explosive to the cube, remove the book from the cube, cut the desired page out, then spray sunscreen on both sides of the page (this is to trick the UV detection system into thinking the page is a forgery), then hide the page in the room amongst other books. Supposedly, Gideon manages to do all this while evading the many security cameras in the room. Sorry, that is just a little too much to believe is possible.

And then, I just could not suspend disbelief to allow myself to fall into the scenario of the Cyclops on the island. It was very "King Kong-ish" in that the creature obviously developed a fondness for Amiko and she was able to tame the wild beast. it was just a bit too much.

I am a HUGE fan of Preston and Child, the Pendergast series are some of the most entertaining I have read. However, in recent years, they have fallen short with that series, and continue to do so with the Gideon Crew series. I hate to say it, but I think that the team of Preston and Child are losing their touch.

However, having said that - if your are completely bored, and are willing to just allow yourself to suspend belief and enjoy a fast paced interesting story, this is the book for you.
Title - The Lost Island

Author - Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

Summary -

Gideon Crew is a scientist and master thief, who has a terminal condition. He is expected to only have 10 months to live. His eccentric employer offers him an opportunity to find an ancient discovery that may heal all diseases and abnormalities. A chance for Gideon to save his own life.
First he must steal a page from the Book of Kells. An ancient book written on Vellum by monks, considered to be Irelands greatest national treasure. From there, decipher a puzzle and map hidden on one of the pages. A map that tells of a secret place that holds a special healing power.
Gideon's partner believes that the page is much more than a treasure map. It is a retelling of the tale of The Odyssey by Homer. It is proof that the Greeks discovered America in the 1200s and the myth of Odysseus is the story of how he crossed the ocean to the Caribbean. That the island spoken of in legend and hinted of in the map does exist.
But between Gideon and his cure are pirates and forgotten natives and an island where time has never moved. An island that monsters inhabit guarding the very secrets Gideon seeks.

Review -

This is the third book in the Gideon Crew series and I figure after three novels I've given it time enough to impress me. It has failed in that again.
I love Preston and Child books and when the authors write on their own as well. But the Gideon Crew novels are far below the quality of their other work.
A page in an ancient book that hides a Greek map of the new world? Homer's tales of the Odyssey to be taken literally? Pirates on the high seas? Shipwrecked. Angry natives. Human sacrifice. A forgotten species of humanoid that is as big as bigfoot with one eye? A root that cures all ills.
The book is filled with legend and fact and supposition and fable. Which is normally good but in this case it is far too many ingredients in the story and it comes out tasteless and confusing. Gideon himself is not a very likable character and neither are many other primary characters in the book.
You actually end up rooting for the Cyclops and hoping he doesn't fall for the human female he is throwing himself away for. Just as if someone lifted it from King Kong.
Overall not very good. Muddled and confusing.
