The banter between the characters is awful! Only once did it make me laugh, the rest of the time I was just rolling my eyes. The main character, Dani, is conceited and I quickly grew tired of hearing about how great her breasts were and how pretty she was. It's one thing to hear a description, but this was first person bragging, and I thought that was weird. It took away from the actual book, which wasn't that great anyway. It could not afford to lose credibility. Completely unrealistic scenarios, an obvious outcome (for the most part) and not a great vocabulary choice. To top it off, a slow build up to an abrupt ending that was frustrating. Not a good book in my opinion.Product details

'Promise You Won't Tell?' had a good premise. It had a lot of potential to be a good story. And it was, mostly. There was humor, a smidge of intrigue, and an interesting line up of characters and side stories. However, I feel like the author fell a little short on the believability and the delivery of the potential the story had to offer.
Dani Ripper, Private Eye, was witty in a often times juvenile way. Her offbeat style of sarcasm made it harder to believe the times she tried to be serious. Her partner is portrayed as a spoiled, overly smart, boy but he's not really fleshed out as a character that you can attach to. And her nonexistent secretary with fantastical excuses shows up to save the day? That's enough to wrap your head around until the clients are introduced. The one that matters though is Riley Freeman. A student at a local prep high school Riley thinks that maybe something inappropriate might have happened last weekend while she was staying at a friends home. But she's not certain.
This is where the believability exits the storyline. Some of the things that Dani and her cohorts do to try to solve this case are so unbelievable that it is almost laughable. The level of self confidence that Dani has in herself and the extent to which things go the way she believes they will is just a tad beyond outrageous. I think my biggest disappointment, though not as far stretched from a possible truth as the rest of the story, was the ending.
You might had decided that I didn't like this book. But I did rate it 3 stars. The truth is I wanted to rate it higher. I did enjoy reading it. It was a light, fast, interesting read. Sarcasm doesn't phase me, I tend to use it a lot myself. Outrageous story lines and crazy off the wall happenings are normal for me. Perhaps not to the extent that Dani experienced but I have my own level of genteel insanity to deal with daily. The entire story just never 'clicked' for me. It was interesting. It was good. But there was just too much over the top. I would definitely say it is not a story for just anyone. But as a quick lazy day read it definitely fits.
It is just shocking to me that a joke of an author made a career writing strings of stupidity mixed with overt, cheap sex. Congratulations to the author, however, for getting people to buy this crap. I wish I could at least find one thing positive to say about the author, but he appears to have no interest in making an effort to write, preferring rather to follow implausible event after implausible event, all mixed with cheap sex. The covers of his books say it all--always some hot chick's legs with an incongruous item (e.g., a chicken) to keep us all guessing!
Reviewing this title is difficult. On one hand I think it's a solid enough read, but on the other hand, clearly not great. There's a lot that just doesn't work. I see potential in the writing, but this isn't that good on its own. There's good and bad. Here's a few of my takes.
Hit It's funny. There are some seriously funny moments that made my LOL.
Miss Those same moments and a lot of others made me say WTF? It's a weird humour that I get, but it's also a bit of that "this is so bad, it's freaking hilarious" vibe to it. And there was way too much of that. There were points where I felt like the humour is covering up a weak voice.
Hit The plot is timely and not a cookie cutter mystery. This makes it easily relatable because we all have a certain level of knowledge and/or interest and being just a little different in the story makes it interesting and worth turning the page.
Miss It's completely predictable. You know exactly what's happening, though I will say you might not know exactly why. Every question that gets asked you'll ask yourself pages before Dani gets to it. I think the description of the story itself doesn't help. Even before you read a page you know that there's something fishy here and that puts you on alert.
Hit Interesting characters. All of the characters are detailed enough that they jump off if the page.
Miss They're all inexplicably weird and Dani is the least likable if all. I just didn't get her. She wasn't actually that funny and I found myself asking where the others were. She's too witty with little substance to make her a full character. A bit annoying when it's her point of view we're getting.
Hit Good pacing.
Miss Felt like there are a few throw away side stories and not enough meat when it comes to plot and character development. How can there be both good pacing and being more or less? The story itself moves along which is great and there's a full world going on here, but nothing is done with these extra bits and side stories. You could take them out and not blink. The lean-ness in development comes in when you look at the fact that issues are resolved fairly quickly where I think it would have been more interesting if we could have drawn this out and maybe used these extras to do that a bit more and allow us to see their world and relationships. I think the "more" I'm looking for there would probably fix what I didn't particularly like in every way.
Hit Easy read. There isn't this crazy amount of metaphor and flowery imagery. Not that all of those literary techniques aren't great in the right place, but sometimes you just need to sit back and cruise. This works for that.
Miss There's no depth. Basically it's a little too fluffy, mostly for the reasons above.
All in all, a nice enough read. It's not brilliant writing, but it's not cringe worthy either. I wouldn't necessarily recommend anyone buy it, but I wouldn't caution against it either. If you have a few hours to kill and nothing else to do, at the very least, you'll get a chuckle.
This book got so many bad reviews that I wanted to try it out for myself to see what the fuss was all about. I should have listened and stayed away. I couldn't make it past chapter 3! I couldn't even tell who the "I" was in the beginning of the story. The ping pong dialogue was frenetic. It was totally confusing. You can really tell it's a man trying to write a female character. He really has no clue.
It's summed up on page 7, one of the characters (I can't tell who) says, "This conversation makes no sense!" Very correct indeed. If the rest of the book is like this....omg...it gives me an anxiety headache just thinking about it.
